NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Swarm Aero, a startup drone manufacturer, is positioning its newly unveiled Gamera unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a strong contender to replace the Air Force’s MQ-9A Reaper. Company executives say the dual-hull design meets the Pentagon’s requirements for a high-altitude, long-range hunter-killer system.
The Gamera made its public debut as a full-scale mockup at the Air and Space Forces Association conference. According to Swarm, the turboprop-powered drone features a 72-foot wingspan, an unrefueled range of 9,000 nautical miles (10,357 miles), and seven hardpoints for carrying munitions, offering the modularity required for diverse multirole missions.
Unlike the MQ-9 Reaper and other operational long-range unmanned aircraft, the Gamera lacks a central fuselage. Instead, it features two parallel, oblong fuselages offset from the center. An executive explained to Breaking Defense that this unconventional layout was a deliberate tradeoff designed to maximize range.
“We’ve cut against the conventional wisdom, which holds that delivering payloads over long ranges against critical targets requires stealth and extensive protection,” Oliver Palmer, co-founder and chief revenue officer of Swarm, said in an interview ahead of the announcement. “Instead, we’ve created a very simple, non-stealthy aircraft that is optimized for extreme range.”
Swarm is submitting the Gamera for the Pentagon’s Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) program. Run by the Defense Innovation Unit and the Air Force, the MMA initiative seeks to acquire a more affordable, attrition-tolerant replacement for the Reaper, particularly after significant losses during conflicts with Iran. Officials note that the MQ-9A can cost up to $50 million depending on its configuration.
The MMA program has established highly ambitious cost targets. During a press briefing on Sept. 3, Air Force officials stated a goal of reducing the unit cost of the MMA air vehicle to approximately $10 million per unit and revealed directives to accelerate the program’s deployment timeline.
Swarm is not the first to enter the MMA competition. General Atomics, the manufacturer of the MQ-9A, has already unveiled its own candidate, named Wildfire, and more entrants are expected.
However, Palmer asserted that Swarm can meet or beat the Air Force’s cost target, promising highly competitive pricing. Swarm CEO Peter Kalogiannis added that reducing costs requires a concerted effort to eliminate expenses at every design level, rather than relying on a single “silver bullet” solution.
Both executives emphasized that the Gamera was designed with high modularity, aligning with the Pentagon’s goal of facilitating easy payload swaps and rapid hardware and software iterations. The drone is capable of carrying the weapon loads required by the program, which, according to the July solicitation, specifies a minimum payload capacity of 2,800 pounds.
“We meet the payload-at-range requirements for the 2,800-pound threshold,” Kalogiannis noted. “However, we can certainly trade range for payload capacity, allowing us to carry more cargo over shorter distances, or reduce payload to save weight for fuel and fly farther, depending on mission requirements.”
While some Air Force officials have suggested that a winning MMA design will not feature cutting-edge technology, Kalogiannis argued that a balanced mix of proven and innovative technologies is the right approach. Swarm has partnered with Honeywell to power the Gamera using the TPE331 turboprop engine but identified other areas—such as avionics development and composite aerostructure manufacturing—as highly ripe for innovation.
Swarm’s capabilities extend beyond hardware. The company developed an autonomy suite called Legion and was selected as one of three vendors for a Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) program to prototype a command-and-control solution for drone swarm operations under the Replicator initiative.
Swarm is currently building the Gamera, a project underway since 2022, with plans to achieve its maiden flight later next year. Palmer noted that years of investment in manufacturing capabilities position the company to volume-produce the drones on an accelerated timeline.
Looking ahead, Swarm aims to expand its footprint into the civilian market, targeting applications such as logistics and firefighting.
“Expanding into the civil market has always been part of our strategy,” Kalogiannis stated. “However, the Pentagon is clearly our first customer.”
