Prosecutors stated on Wednesday that the individual accused of fatally shooting an Italian woman at a Swiss rave party is experiencing “psychological problems” and has maintained silence during custody.
As reported by AFP, the suspect surrendered to law enforcement and admitted to the shooting, claiming he had “been suffering from health problems for some time.” The 43-year-old Swiss citizen resides in the canton of Jura.
He remains in custody and is charged with intentional homicide, bodily harm, and violations of firearms laws.
The gunfire erupted early on Sunday as an annual rave was concluding at a racecourse in Aarau, the capital of the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Italian woman Maria Spinelli.
Lead investigator Matthias Schildknecht provided updated information at a press conference, revealing that six people were injured, an increase from the five initially reported.
A search of the suspect’s residence yielded no evidence of “ideological or extremist motives,” according to Aargau cantonal police commander Michael Leupold at the press conference.
Leupold added that the suspect, who had no prior police record, “left the army in 2013 and handed back his personal service weapon.”
Victim’s Legal Counsel Demands Comprehensive Investigation
Maria Spinelli, who had recently relocated to Switzerland to seek employment, is believed to have been struck by a bullet hitting “vital organs in the upper part of her body”.
However, the family’s attorney, Bruno Gallo, stated that “the circumstances of the crime have not yet been fully clarified.”
“Swiss investigators indicate that the arrested man is believed to have suffered from psychiatric problems and, despite this, appears to have legally possessed firearms,” the lawyer said.
“This profile must be fully clarified to determine how this was possible and to examine any potential responsibility, at any level, of those tasked with preventing such a dangerous situation,” Gallo stated.
The attorney has also requested that Italian authorities arrange a state flight to repatriate Spinelli’s remains.
