Switzerland Advances to Round of 16 with 2-0 Victory Over Algeria; Faces Colombia-Ghana Winner in Vancouver
Switzerland secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Algeria at Vancouver Stadium. The Europeans broke through in the 10th minute when Breel Embolo converted a well-worked move to give his side an early lead, adding a second goal early in the second half through Dan Ndoye after the Algerian defense faltered.
The result keeps Switzerland alive in the tournament as they pursue their first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 1954, when they reached the last eight on home soil. Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for the Round of 16 clash against the winner of Friday’s Colombia-Ghana fixture in Kansas City.
Granit Xhaka’s squad will look to progress further than their previous three World Cup Round of 16 exits. For Algeria, the defeat ends their tournament after a dramatic group stage campaign where they survived as one of the best third-placed teams, falling short of matching their own best World Cup Round of 16 performance.
