Mott, formerly an assistant coach for the BBL team last season, has committed to a two-year contract. He becomes the third head coach for the Sixers this year, succeeding Hopes, who assumed the role before departing to return to Australia two months after joining.
Mott joined the Sixers as WBBL head coach last year, prompting discussions about overseeing both men’s and women’s teams. However, the club opted for distinct leadership roles. The WBBL season runs late October to early December, while the BBL spans February to January.
“With BBL and WBBL schedules varying annually, we’ve separated head coaching roles to maintain continuity and stability across both programs,” explained Rachael Haynes, Sydney Sixers general manager.
“Though Matthew’s versatility appealed, prioritizing long-term consistency led to this decision. Our confidence in the WBBL candidate’s capabilities reinforced this choice. A dedicated announcement for that role is forthcoming,” she added.
“Being part of the Sixers family is a privilege. Leading the men’s team now is a dream. Having collaborated closely with the men’s program, I’ve witnessed their talent and potential.
Reflecting on his departure from the WBBL role, Mott stated, “While I’m unable to continue as women’s head coach, I deeply appreciate my tenure. I wish Ash Gardner, the players, and staff success in WBBL12.”
As former Australia Women’s and England Men’s white-ball mentor, Mott spearheaded achievements like back-to-back T20 World Cup wins and the 2022 ODI title. His men’s role concluded after McCullum’s Test focus, with the 2022 T20 triumph followed by a 2023 ODI exit and 2024 T20 semifinal disappointment.
Currently consulting for Lancashire and coaching Manchester Super Giants Women in The Hundred, Mott expressed, “This club’s legacy of excellence drives my enthusiasm to elevate our men’s side further.”
