Former Sydney Swans coach John Longmire expressed profound disappointment at the banning of five players amid reported breaches of club standards. Speaking to Fox Footy, Longmire emphasized the emotional toll, describing the situation as “deep sadness” that has dominated discussions.
The suspended players—Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, and James Jordon—were removed from the squad for the remainder of the season following alleged incidents at a Melbourne hotel.
Victoria Police are conducting an investigation into a separate sexual assault allegation linked to the same event. None of the suspended players have faced formal charges, though they issued a joint apology for their actions.
Longmire clarified that the club’s priority was addressing ethical violations rather than on-field performance. “Football aspirations were never the main focus,” he stated, highlighting the severity of the people issues at the core of the disciplinary actions.
Governor General Sam Mostyn condemned the incident, calling it “shocking” and reaffirming her support for the alleged victim. She criticized Australia’s “appalling” statistics on domestic and sexual violence, urging collective accountability.
The Swans, currently second in the league, will host two finals despite the suspensions. Longmire noted the challenge of rebuilding trust within the club, acknowledging the emotional complexity of balancing accountability with empathy.
The players’ apology statement acknowledged their failure to meet club values: “We know our behavior fell short of expectations and deeply regret the impact on those involved.”
