Families in Nepal have conducted symbolic funeral rites for loved ones who are still unaccounted for, seeking spiritual closure after presuming them deceased.
Within Hindu belief, cremation constitutes an essential final rite; carrying out the ceremony without the physical remains has afforded certain families a sense of spiritual relief.
Meanwhile, Nepalese authorities have interred recovered bodies in temporary graves pending identification. They are preserving DNA samples, photographing distinguishing facial features, and documenting other identifying characteristics to facilitate matching the remains with missing individuals and ultimately reuniting them with their families.
The flash flood of August 26 ranks among the most lethal disasters to afflict the Himalayan nation in recent memory.
The catastrophe claimed over 1,200 lives and left approximately 4,750 persons missing across Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, as a massive surge of mud and debris obliterated towns, roads, bridges, and several hydroelectric dams.
