DAMASCUS — Syria has formally called upon the international community to safeguard its sovereignty against acts of aggression by Israel, asserting a firm commitment to fulfilling its global obligations and restoring regional confidence after decades under an ousted administration.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Syria’s Permanent Representative, Ibrahim Olabi, outlined the country’s relentless efforts to restore stability, eliminate terrorism and illicit drug networks, and pursue genuine diplomatic engagement with global institutions. He condemned Israeli operations extending beyond southern Syrian borders into domestic airspace, noting that airstrikes targeted sites in Syria on the very day the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, visited to address the nuclear file.
Olabi emphasized that the current Syrian leadership is dedicated to transparent cooperation with the IAEA, actively working to dismantle legacy nuclear and chemical weapons inherited from the previous regime. This commitment has resulted in the voluntary disclosure of previously undeclared nuclear materials and the removal of the non-compliance finding imposed on Syria. The envoy contrasted this cooperative approach with the ousted regime’s obstructionist policies—such as facilitating cross-border drug smuggling and deploying chemical weapons—which contributed to regional destabilization. He urged the international community to stand alongside Syria, uphold international law, and confront the ongoing occupation demonstrations across the nation. By choosing to assume its responsibilities with resolve, Syria seeks to rebuild trust and cooperation, particularly as confidence within the multilateral system continues to wane amidst escalating conflicts and arms races.
