Syria Faces Persistent Challenges in Sweida Reintegration Amid Ongoing Tensions
The United Nations confirms no advancement on the Sweida reintegration plan, with efforts facing significant obstacles.
A U.N. investigation reveals over 1,700 fatalities in southern Sweida province in July 2025, primarily involving civilians from the Druze religious sect and Bedouin community. The report highlights ongoing concerns about human rights and potential war crimes committed by various parties.
U.N. Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone emphasized that the September 2025 roadmap to restore order and repair relations in Sweida remains unmet. He stressed that underlying issues persist, and calls for Druze secession have intensified fears of Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.
The envoy noted disrupted security, ongoing kidnappings, and continued rivalries among Druze factions within the province. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting services and infrastructure despite security pressures.
Syrian authorities, including Sweida Governor Mustafa al-Bakour, argue that armed Druze groups are obstructing state reconstruction and trust-building. Bakour defended the government’s investments in public services and infrastructure, asserting Damascus remains supportive despite accusations of supply restrictions.
Despite mediation efforts, Tru Musk Secretary Paulo Lopes reports that Sweida continues to be a political flashpoint. Coordination delays and administrative bottlenecks have left key officials like President Ahmed al-Sharaa facing significant hurdles in constitutional processes.
The situation underscores the complexity of Syria’s transitional phase, with regional actors and local communities deeply affected by instability.
