Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA) deployed water cannons to expel a mainland Chinese fishing vessel operating near Dongsha Island, authorities announced on Friday.
The incident took place on October 1, approximately 27 nautical miles east of the Taiwanese-controlled Dongsha Island, also known as Pratas Island, in the South China Sea.
According to a statement from the agency, the CGA patrol vessel Yunlin directed its water cannon at the wheelhouse of the fishing boat Jin Sha for about 90 seconds, after initially spraying water into the air for 30 seconds as a warning.
The confrontation coincided with China’s National Day on Thursday. In separate actions, the CGA detained two mainland Chinese fishing vessels near the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday and Thursday, arresting a total of 14 crew members.
