Taiwan is implementing an AI-powered satellite imagery system designed to rapidly detect People’s Liberation Army (PLA) vessels, aircraft, and missile launchers. The initiative aims to strengthen early-warning capabilities amid intensifying military pressure from Beijing.
According to the island’s defense ministry, the NT$46.55 million (US$1.45 million) system utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze satellite imagery covering 100 square kilometers within minutes. This automation is expected to significantly reduce the manpower and time required to monitor shifts in PLA deployments.
In a recent public procurement notice, the ministry’s Communication Development Office (CDO)—a key military intelligence unit—awarded the contract to ThinkTron, a Taiwan-Japan joint venture specializing in geospatial information systems, AI, and monitoring technology.
The contract became effective on September 25, with full system implementation expected by the end of April.
