The Tara Polar Station, a pioneering scientific research station designed to drift with the sea ice, departed from the port of Lorient on Sunday afternoon for its inaugural mission to the North Pole. Hundreds of spectators gathered along the quays to witness the launch, which took place in the presence of the Minister for the Sea, Catherine Chabaud.

The vessel’s crew is tasked with advancing our understanding of Arctic Ocean biodiversity and assessing the impacts of climate change in one of the planet’s most rapidly warming regions. This area is warming three to four times faster than the global average, with sea ice retreating at an alarming rate.

The expedition unites twelve nations, including Germany, Canada, the United States, Spain, Switzerland, and Japan, in a collaborative effort to study the region’s fragile ecosystem. The station, shaped like an igloo on a massive buoy, is engineered to withstand extreme pressures from sea ice and temperatures as low as −52 °C.

In mid-August, the station will navigate Russia’s coastline under the escort of an icebreaker. By early September, it will become trapped in the pack ice and begin drifting with it for 350 to 500 days, advancing at approximately 10 kilometers daily toward the Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard. Researchers expect arrival there by late 2027.

A Mission at the Heart of the Ice

Twelve crew members will over winter the station’s first phase, including six scientists, while an additional 18 will join during summer months. The team, rigorously screened through medical and psychological evaluations, has also undergone intensive training to prepare for extreme isolation and environmental conditions.

During the five-month polar night, with average temperatures of −25 °C and encounters with polar bears, the crew will rely on firearm training and the assistance of a Lapponian herder dog to detect approaching wildlife.

Advancing Climate Science and Biodiversity Studies

Equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory and advanced sensors, the team will collect over 10,000 samples from water columns reaching depths of 2,000 meters, alongside atmospheric and sea-ice cavity analyses. These efforts aim to document Arctic biodiversity before irreversible environmental shifts occur.

Researchers will also explore the role of bacteria in cloud formation—a key factor in refining climate models. The €6 million initial mission marks the beginning of a decade-long program, with subsequent expeditions planned biennially through 2045.
