KHYBER: Teachers from various districts stationed in Khyber have raised concerns after receiving orders to vacate residential quarters and hostels in Jamrud.
During a press conference at the Jamrud Press Club, Noor Sher Afridi, along with colleagues Salim Wazir, Sadeeq Ahmad, Bakht Begum, Rubi Parvaiz, and Safia Begum, stated that the Directorate of Health and General Services had issued notices demanding immediate evacuation. The properties in question belong to the education department, creating legal ambiguity over their residency rights.
These directives followed Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi’s announcement about establishing a nursing and medical college in Jamrud. The teachers emphasized that they had occupied the buildings for over two decades, and such sudden evictions would destabilize their lives, particularly since many have familial ties to the region.
Most of the affected teachers originate from outside Khyber but have served locally for years. Several of their children are enrolled in local schools and colleges, further complicating the situation. They clarified that allotment letters for the quarters were issued under formal processes, with 5% of their salaries deducted monthly for utility bills under their names.
“We support developmental projects, including the nursing college, but the abrupt evacuation without adequate alternatives is deeply unfair,” they asserted. The teachers called on Chief Minister Afridi, the education secretary, and the education directorate to reconsider the plan and utilize other available infrastructure for the college’s development.
