Two 13‑year‑old girls were seriously injured and a 16‑year‑old suspect was arrested following an assault at Welfen‑Gymnasium secondary school in Schongau, Upper Bavaria.

Police reported that a major operation is underway around the school in the small town of Schongau.

The suspect was found to be carrying both a knife and a firearm, and authorities believe he acted alone.

Both girls are not in life‑threatening condition, although police are still determining the full extent of injuries sustained by others involved.

A police spokeswoman told AFP news agency that the weapon used in the attack was unclear and declined to confirm reports of a knife being used.

The suspect’s identity remains unknown, and it is unclear whether he has any association with the school.

The spokesperson said the police believe the incident qualifies as a “rampagePUBLIC.”

A contact point for relatives and parents of students has been established at a local fire station.

According to its website, the school was founded in 1887 and originally served primarily as a girls’ school; it has been co‑educational for the past forty years.
