Authorities confirm nine detainees and one family member died during the disturbance at the Mazatlan facility.
A violent altercation at the El Castillo Penitentiary Centre in Mazatlan, located in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, has left ten people dead and sixteen others injured, according to state officials.
On Thursday, the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat confirmed the toll, stating that the internal riot resulted in the deaths of nine incarcerated individuals and one visiting family member.
Public Security Secretary Sinuhe Tellez revealed via a social media video that the deceased visitor was a minor.
The sixteen injured inmates were transferred to receive medical care, the secretariat noted.
Following the deployment of an inter-institutional security force, the facility is now reported to be under control, with officers maintaining a presence on-site.
Tellez stated that social workers are reaching out to the families of the victims, while noting that prison visits have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. He assured that the remaining detainee population is safe.
The incident occurs in Sinaloa, a region known as a battleground for rival factions within the Sinaloa drug cartel. It is also one of six Mexican states where the US State Department advises American citizens against travel due to security risks.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether the prison violence is connected to the ongoing cartel conflict.
