Tensions appear to be mounting within the Monday Night Football booth.
According to Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, veteran broadcaster Joe Buck and Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman engaged in a heated exchange inside the announcer booth at SoFi Stadium before Monday night’s Rams‑Bills contest.
Buck secured a new contract with ESPN last month reportedly worth over $100 million for the next six seasons. The deal will also have him calling the Super Bowl this year and again when ESPN/ABC regains the rights in 2031. Aikman, however, has not yet received a formal contract extension offer.
Buck reportedly “broke the ice” regarding the unspoken tension, prompting an argument that was defused before kickoff. The game proceeded without incident, and the two commentators delivered their broadcast as planned.
Aikman spent 12 seasons with the Cowboys, leading the franchise to three Super Bowl titles before retiring after the 2000 season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Aikman moved into broadcasting after his playing days, joining Buck at Fox in 2002. The duo became the longest‑tenured broadcast team in NFL history and among the sport’s most recognizable voices. They departed Fox for ESPN in 2022, with Aikman signing his contract first and Buck following weeks later.
It remains unclear what would become of Aikman should he leave ESPN after the Super Bowl. While several networks could be interested, an NFL season without the iconic Buck‑Aikman pairing would be uncharted territory.
