Errol Spence Jr announced his retirement from boxing after losing unanimously to Tim Tszyu, with Terence Crawford sharing his immediate reaction ringside.
This past weekend in Sydney, Spence made his return after a three‑year hiatus following his 2023 loss to Crawford, taking on Tszyu. Although the former unified welterweight champion went the distance and started competitively, Tszyu dominated the later rounds to secure a wide‑margin decision.
Spence appeared strained under pressure and seemed past his peak. After the bout, the 36‑year‑old confirmed he would retire, citing a career record of 28‑2 with 22 knockouts.
“I’ve got my faculties intact. My money is good, it’s working for itself. Everything’s good. I’ve got a beautiful family. I thank God that I’m gracious enough to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family still by my side.
“I asked a lot of questions of myself. Now it’s time to go home with my family and start a new life.”
Following the fight, Fight Hub TV asked Crawford whether he believed Spence had made the right choice.
“Yeah. He’s been in a lot of wars. With his fighting style – come forward, take some punishment, dish some punishment and try to break somebody down – that type of style only goes so far … Like I said, he was off‑balance. He just didn’t have it tonight.”
Crawford handed Spence his first professional defeat when they met for the undisputed welterweight title three years ago, a bout that came shortly after Spence survived a near‑fatal car crash that cast doubt on his boxing future.
