The Houston Texans acquired David Montgomery early in the offseason to address a ground game that ranked 22nd in the league last year, and the organization views the veteran as far more than a complementary piece. Despite spending the previous three seasons behind Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit, Montgomery is being tabbed as a lead back capable of handling every-down duties.
Running backs coach and assistant head coach Danny Barrett emphasized Montgomery’s complete skill set and professional approach following the trade.
“He’s a three-down back,” Barrett said, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. “He can do it all. It first starts with his mentality. He comes to work every day, the same guy every day, asking, ‘How can I get better?’ The first meeting we had, we talked about how we can get better. He wants to be the best, leave a mark on the game, and help the young guys develop that mindset. He’s going to finish every run. He’s going to finish every block. That mentality he’s brought to our room is going to carry us to the next level with the talent we have.”
While rookie Woody Marks led the team in rushing yards last season, his profile differs from the dynamic threat Gibbs presents. That distinction opens a significant opportunity for Montgomery to define the backfield in Houston, where the Texans are counting on his experience and versatility to spark an offensive surge this fall.
