Texas A&M Coach Elko Provides Status Update on Returning Senior Linebacker

The linebacker rotation for Texas A&M has shown flashes of promise but remains a work in progress through the opening two contests of the 2026 season. Senior Daymion Sanford has not yet made his debut following a severe fibula injury that could sideline him for more than half the campaign. However, his swift recovery and preseason participation provided coach Mike Elko and his staff with optimism regarding an early return.

Sanford suited up and warmed up during both victories against Missouri State and Arizona State on Saturday, but his absence was notably felt, particularly on third down. With Sanford sidelined, sophomore Noah Mikhail and transfer Ray Coney have started, with Mikhail emerging as the most effective linebacker through the first two games.

Heading into the offseason, new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill and linebackers coach Travis Williams relied on Coney to master the defense as the “green dot” and starting middle linebacker, banking on Mikhail and junior Jordan Lockhart to develop into reliable, versatile starters.

Over the first two games, Mikhail has recorded 13 tackles and posted the team’s highest run-defense grade against Arizona State, whereas Coney has 12 tackles but posted one of the lowest tackling grades and struggled in coverage. Despite these disparities, Mike Elko trusts this duo and provided an update on Sanford’s expected return.

“It’s never a problem when you have too many good players. I’ve never once had that be a problem,” Elko said. “Daymion is a kid who is a captain, a really talented player, and he’s going to be ready at some point. In his absence, it has been awesome to see Ray (Coney) and Noah (Mikhail). We’ll have to be creative with how we utilize those three guys when we get Daymion back.”

It will be fascinating to observe how Elko, Hemphill, and Williams manage the linebacker rotation once Sanford returns, which could occur against Kentucky on Wednesday or, more likely, against LSU in Baton Rouge the following Saturday.
