Sixteen-year-old rock artist Nene Royal has claimed the top prize on America’s Got Talent, becoming the first Thai contestant to win the long-running series.
In Tuesday’s finale in California, Nene—whose real name is Rattikarn Amloy—delivered a performance of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”
Her heavy metal set outshone nine other finalists, encompassing magicians, dog acts, and a robotic dance troupe.
Her victory has sparked celebrations across Thailand, with citizens proud that she reached one of the world’s biggest stages. The Thai government hailed her as “an inspiration to anyone who dares to dream big.”
Nene quickly became a fan favorite following a viral audition clip in which she performed The Cranberries’ “Zombie,” leaving the judges stunned; the video has since amassed 20 million views.
On Wednesday evening, before the results were revealed, Nene joined Linkin Park on stage to perform their 2024 track “The Emptiness Machine.”
That night, overcome with emotion, she knelt on the stage floor as she was crowned winner of the 21st season, taking home $1 million (£755,000).
“I’m very happy and emotional right now,” she said, expressing gratitude for the support.
Back in Thailand, her legion of fans eagerly followed the results show, though they could not watch the live broadcast on NBC.
Many turned to a YouTube livestream instead, only to be thrown into distress when the feed cut out mid-announcement.
Moments later, relief and joy spread as news broke that Nene had secured her historic win.
“History made!” one Thai Facebook user wrote.
“Let the world know this Thai kid is incredibly talented,” wrote another.
