During the lively opening weekend block party for the LACMA museum’s new building—complete with live music, food trucks, and drink carts—a passerby stopped us in our tracks. Walking through the crowd, she remarked, “that is an *excellent* shirt.” Naturally, I turned to my fiancée, assuming the praise was for her outfit, only to realize she was wearing a dress.

I picked this shirt up at its regular price of under $30, but it currently carries an active coupon that brings the cost down to just $21.

Shopping for a short-sleeve, button-up knit polo often feels like walking into a wall. Premium options start at $70 and climb quickly, while budget-friendly alternatives are typically tight, fine-gauge shirts with tidy collars—more suited for business casual wear than relaxed weekends. At the lower end, cheap synthetic options tend to pill, stretch out, and lose their shape after just a few wash cycles.

Typically, you can only have two of these three traits: casual, cotton, or affordable.

This has been the industry standard for years, which is why I was surprised when Amazon’s Essentials house line didn’t already have a chunky knit polo, considering their existing catalog of 100% cotton knit cardigans and crewnecks. This year, they finally filled that gap.

I purchased the Dark Blue Stripe version back in April—it actually reads more like a dark teal in person—and also grabbed the solid black. The striped knit has been a staple in my rotation all summer, especially when I want to look casual, effortless, and slightly retro, yet still put-together.

The Secret to a Relaxed, Off-Duty Look

The answer lies in the knit construction. Most short-sleeve knit shirts and polos feature a tight, fine-gauge knit, resulting in a smooth, dense fabric that leans heavily toward business casual. In contrast, this piece utilizes a loose, chunky, open-knit pattern. The visible texture instantly shifts the aesthetic toward a laid-back, vacation-ready vibe.

A Note on Fabric Sheerness

The open knit that delivers the relaxed aesthetic can sometimes be sheer, depending on your skin tone and the chosen colorway. For example, the black variation reveals a bit of skin underneath in my case.
