In 2010, a court ordered Dane Cook’s brother to repay $12 million after he and his wife pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the comedian.
Darryl McCauley received a six-year prison sentence for charges including larceny, forgery, and embezzlement, while his wife, Erika McCauley, was sentenced to two to three years on two counts of larceny.
Following his release from prison, McCauley vanished without a trace.
In the documentary Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, Cook asks, “Where is he? What has he done? How does this end?” The film explores the betrayal that consumed the comedian in 2008, when he discovered his half-brother and business partner had been stealing millions behind the scenes.
Cook recounts in the trailer how both he and McCauley once dreamed of performing as stand-up comedians. While Cook rose to prominence as one of the early 2000s’ most popular comics, McCauley worked as a corrections officer and later managed his brother’s finances. Reflecting on their past, Cook described McCauley as a person who spent so much time pretending to be something he wasn’t.
As Cook’s career as one of the highest-paid comedians progressed, footage shows McCauley withdrawing $20,000, $50,000, and even $100,000 from Cook’s accounts. Cook recalls saying, “I was starting to feel something I couldn’t really identify. Was he hiding it in different places, stockpiling this money?”
The answer, Cook confirms: yes. His brother stuffed bricks of cash in multiple locations, even wrapping money in plastic and concealing it inside spaghetti sauce jars.
In the trailer, Cook asserts, “I do believe that there’s money out there. I believe there are people who know more.”
Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story is scheduled for release on September 29.
