Many TVs from 2010 to 2015 supported 3D, but using the feature involved multiple barriers. Purchasing 3D glasses—ranging from $10 to $20 for passive frames or $50+ for rechargeable active glasses—was required. Compatibility with 3D Blu-ray players and the scarcity of 3D content further limited accessibility. While 3D Blu-rays offered a decent theatrical replication for enthusiasts, immersion depended on TV size and viewing distance. Larger screens like 42-inch or 50-inch sets were better for experiences like *Avatar*, but sharing 3D with groups was impractical due to glass costs or reliance on friends’ equipment.
A major drawback was that passive 3D TVs reduced 1080p resolution by 50%, as they displayed separate images. Active glass systems avoided this but were costly and limited by battery life, making group viewing difficult. Additionally, 3D content was scarce beyond niche broadcasts. Networks like the BBC and ESPN abandoned 3D in 2013, citing low consumer interest. Kim Shillinglaw, the BBC’s 3D head, noted in 2013 that home viewing was cumbersome compared to cinematic experiences, contributing to the format’s decline.
The rise of 4K HDR TVs provided a superior alternative. With sharper visuals, brighter displays, and immediate access to 4K streaming content from Netflix and others, 4K eliminated the need for glasses, special players, or hunting for 3D content. Even standard-definition shows looked better on modern 4K sets.
A Precision Reports study found that while 25% of households with 3D TVs used the technology during its peak (2010–2018), adoption dropped sharply. 65% of users cited insufficient content, 50% reported discomfort during extended viewing, and 42% left due to high costs. Despite this, the market is projected to grow 15% by 2036, driven by glasses-free 3D TVs, commercial applications, and gaming. However, glasses-free models often lack multi-viewer support due to reliance on eye-tracking technology, a limitation I have not found convincing in practice.
