The Elder Scrolls franchise remains as popular as ever, despite nearly 18 years having passed without a new main single-player installment. The Elder Scrolls VI has been in development for roughly half that period, though no new details have emerged since its initial teaser at E3 2018.
While fans await the next major release, they can still engage with the world through The Elder Scrolls Online, which continues receiving regular updates and delivering compelling experiences. Another overlooked avenue is The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era, an official cooperative tabletop board game developed by Chip Theory Games and licensed by ZeniMax Online Studios. Now, that game is poised for a significant upgrade with an exciting new expansion.
Set in Tamriel during the Second Era, Betrayal of the Second Era challenges players to thwart mage Deslandra and the Soldiers of the Void from initiating the Great Nullification. The upcoming Shadows of Oblivion expansion, part of the Heroes of Tamriel wave, introduces five Daedric Princes—Hermeaus Mora, Sheogorath, Mehrunes Dagon, Azura, and Sanguine—with each offering dual gameplay paths: a blessing and a curse. Manufacturer Chip Theory Games explained: “Each of the five Daedric princes comes with something akin to a side quest, offering a blessing and a curse. It’s recommended that adventurers play with both, but those looking to further manipulate the game’s difficulty could choose one or the other. With unique componentry and so many ways to adjust the gameplay experience, we’re very excited about what Shadows of Oblivion has to offer.”
The average game session lasts approximately two hours and supports up to four players—a perfect way to enjoy the franchise with friends while waiting for the next video game release. Currently available for pre-order at £17.00, with shipments scheduled for January through March of next year, it offers excellent value for Elder Scrolls enthusiasts seeking immersive tabletop storytelling.
