The original agreement aimed to halt hostilities and guarantee uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy passageway, yet talks collapsed under mutual accusations of non-compliance.
These remarks emerged as the 60-day negotiation window concluded without renewal. Addressing reporters, Trump emphasized that curbing Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon remains an immutable condition for any potential accord. He also revisited prior proposals, including formally annexing the waterway as U.S. territory—a move that would grant Washington “complete control” over the strategic chokepoint.
