In The Sheep Detectives, Mopple the anthropomorphic sheep possesses a remarkable gift: he never forgets a thing. His flawless recall places him among a long tradition of fictional characters endowed with some form of photographic memory—an ability that, while fantastical, serves as a powerful narrative tool. Sherlock Holmes relies on his perfect recall to solve mysteries, visualizing clues within his famed “mind palace.” Similarly, in The Pitt, medical student Joy Kwon’s eidetic memory becomes invaluable when her hospital loses access to electronic health records, allowing her to recall patient details with precision.

Yet, despite the allure of such superhuman abilities, real human brains do not operate like archives or recording devices.

“A lot of people believe that our memory acts like a video recorder—that it captures reality exactly as it unfolds and stores it flawlessly,” explains Gabrielle Principe, a developmental psychologist at theCollege of Charleston in South Carolina. To challenge this misconception, she assigns her students a simple task: draw a penny from memory. None succeed.

Some children occasionally report experiencing eidetic imagery, the sensation of mentally visualizing objects long after they’ve vanished from view. However, even these vivid impressions are imperfect and fleeting. While some individuals exhibit extraordinary mnemonic capabilities, forgetfulness remains universal—and it is far from a weakness.

Our minds lack the capacity to store every detail of every experience. “If we tried to retain everything, we’d be overwhelmed by mental clutter,” says Simona Ghetti, a developmental psychologist at the University of California, Davis. Without selective retention, distinguishing important memories from trivial minutiae would become nearly impossible, undermining our ability to recall what truly matters.

Memory formation typically begins around age three, though most early recollections fade over time. “There are always people who insist they remember being born,” Ghetti notes. “But upon closer examination, those memories rarely hold up.”

The memories that endure are deeply influenced by emotion. Positive recollections often lift our spirits, whereas dwelling on negative experiences can intensify struggles with depression or anxiety. “We forget unpleasant events faster than pleasant ones,” Principe observes. This bias isn’t merely psychological—it’s emotionally protective.

People also tend to suppress memories that conflict with their self-image. “If you see yourself as kind and optimistic, you might unconsciously forget moments when you acted otherwise,” Principe adds.

Even cherished memories are not infallible snapshots. They evolve, distort, and sometimes blend fact with fiction.

Recalling past events activates neural networks across multiple brain regions—including the hippocampi flanking the ears, the prefrontal cortex near the forehead, and the cerebellum at the skullbase. “Sometimes we retrieve the wrong piece of information,” Principe says. “We confuse dreams with memories, or mix in details others have shared with us. Before we know it, fabricated fragments start feeling authentic.” Even individuals with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM)—those capable of recalling nearly every personal event since childhood—remain vulnerable to errors.

Most false memories are harmless, Ghetti notes. Someone might mistakenly believe they confided in their partner about a humorous incident rather than their parent—or perhaps no one at all. But when memory lapses occur in critical contexts—such as identifying suspects or testifying in court—the consequences can be life-altering.

Despite society’s fascination with perfect recall, forgetfulness plays an essential role in maintaining cognitive clarity and emotional well-being. As Princie reflects: “Nostalgia is beautiful. I still remember my children as babies whenever I choose to revisit that moment in my mind.”
