The Rolling Stones Unveil “Divine Intervention” Featuring Robert Smith[/TITLE>
Mick Jagger delivers a soulful falsetto on “Jealous Lover,” one of two new tracks from the Rolling Stones’ forthcoming Foreign Tongues album, slated for release on July 10. A video, currently exclusive to Amazon Music, follows Anya Taylor‑Joy as she confronts her boyfriend, Charles Melton, over a rekindled affair. The showdown spills into a motel parking lot before escalating inside the motel itself, underscored by a funky R&B backdrop. For listeners without Amazon Music, “Jealous Lover” is also available on YouTube and other streaming platforms. The track features Steve Winwood on Rhodes piano and organ, Andrew Watt on multiple instruments, and Matt Clifford on synth.
“Divine Intervention,” another release from Foreign Tongues, incorporates additional guitar played by Robert Smith of the Cure. The upbeat composition envisions an apocalyptic scenario and features Winwood on piano and organ, Watt on synths and background vocals, saxophonist James King, and trumpeter Ron Blake.
During a press event in New York, Jagger recounted how Smith joined the album: “I arrived in London for vocals and heard a man in a long gown stepping behind me. When he turned, he was covered in lipstick, and I said, ‘You’re Robert Smith of the Cure!’ He replied, ‘Yeah!’ I told him, ‘While you’re here, let’s get something done.’”
The new songs follow earlier singles “In the Stars” and “Rough and Twisted.” Guest contributors include Paul McCartney, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bruno Mars. The session also features a posthumous appearance by original Stones drummer Charlie Watts.
To support the album, the Stones launched the podcast Speaking in Tongues, hosted by Norah Jones. The inaugural episode includes conversations with Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ron Wood.
Richards recently remarked that touring may no longer be viable, suggesting residencies in cities such as London, New York, Paris, or Rome as potential alternatives for future performances.
