Thessaloniki confronts major wildfire outbreak amid strong winds

A rapidly spreading wildfire erupted in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, on July 4, forcing residents in three nearby northern suburbs to evacuate. The blaze began in a rugged ravine within mountainous terrain, its rapid expansion fueled by powerful winds that impeded firefighting efforts. Local authorities reported that a 76-year-old man was detained in connection with the fire, allegedly starting it when sparks from his vehicle ignited the flames.
