Third Man Records is set to reissue Loretta Lynn’s Van Lear Rose, the acclaimed 2004 comeback album that marked her collaboration with Jack White. Available November 13 in both vinyl and CD formats, the release will mark the album’s return to streaming platforms for the first time since its unexplained removal in 2021. (Pitchfork has contacted Third Man Records for additional details.) In the meantime, the single “Miss Being Mrs.” is available on all major music platforms.
“It is an incredible honor to work again with Jack and his amazing team at Third Man to re-release this incredible album,” said Patsy Russell, Lynn’s daughter, in a press statement. “Our mother’s spirit lives on through this timeless music, and we are thrilled that fans old and new will be reminded of this great work.”
Lynn had not released a solo album since 1988’s Who Was That Stranger when White encouraged her to come out of early retirement. Van Lear Rose subsequently won two Grammy Awards: Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the duet “Portland Oregon,” and Best Country Album. The upcoming reissue includes the bonus track “Just to Have You Back,” previously available only on the Third Man Vault reissue released in 2015.
The reissue represents a significant moment for fans of country music and Lynn’s enduring legacy, bringing renewed attention to an album that helped revitalize her career nearly two decades ago.
Originally hailed as one of the best albums of 2004, Van Lear Rose showcased Lynn’s ability to evolve while staying true to her roots, featuring production by White that blended her traditional country sound with contemporary elements.
Fans can expect the reissue to include remastered audio and potentially additional liner notes documenting the album’s creation and impact on Lynn’s career trajectory.
