Thomas Chabot Named Ottawa Senators Captain to Lead Franchise into New Era

On September 29, the Ottawa Senators officially announced that defenseman Thomas Chabot has been named the 11th captain in franchise history, stepping into a pivotal leadership role.

Following Brady Tkachuk’s trade request, subsequent move to the Florida Panthers, and the resulting vacancy of the captaincy, intense speculation arose regarding the club’s next leader. Chabot was selected from a highly competitive pool of candidates that included Tim Stützle, Jake Sanderson, and veteran Claude Giroux.

Why Chabot Over Stützle or Sanderson?

The fact that Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson were not chosen for the captaincy does not diminish their leadership potential. In truth, having such highly capable contenders is a testament to the team’s depth and the luxury of having multiple elite leaders.

During the press conference announcing the decision, General Manager Steve Staios addressed the media from the podium.

Staios remarked, “This is a well-earned and highly deserved honor. Thomas exemplifies everything that it means to be an Ottawa Senator. It is a proud day for our organization.”

This significant announcement came just five days after the birth of Chabot’s daughter, Romy, marking a monumental week for the Chabot family.

In his acceptance speech, Chabot expressed his deep connection to the city, stating, “Ottawa is home for us. We bought our first house here. We had our first child here. Ottawa will always be close to our heart no matter what.”

Chabot spoke passionately about the resilience of the fanbase, his deep affection for the city, and the immense pride he feels representing the team on the ice every night.

While compelling cases could be made for other outstanding candidates, there are no significant objections to Chabot assuming the captaincy.

Chabot Remains Loyal Through Difficult Seasons

Drafted 18th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Chabot joined the Senators full-time following the team’s improbable 2017 run to the Eastern Conference Final.

In his rookie campaign, Chabot recorded 25 points in 63 games, elevating his production to 55 points in his sophomore season.

Although that 55-point campaign remains his highest point total in nine seasons, Chabot has evolved into an exceptionally well-rounded defenseman. Known for his strong puck-moving capabilities and reliable shutdown skills, he consistently leads by example on the ice.

Throughout his tenure, one of Chabot’s primary challenges has been finding the ideal defensive partner. He found great chemistry with Dylan DeMelo, but DeMelo was traded to the Winnipeg Jets during the team’s rebuild.

Following DeMelo’s departure, Chabot has partnered with a succession of players, including Ron Hainsey, Nikita Zaitsev, Erik Brännström, and Travis Hamonic.

While he has formed solid pairings with players like Artem Zub and Nick Jensen, Chabot has faced a rotating carousel of defensive partners. Despite this instability, he has consistently developed into an elite defenseman and a genuine leader in the locker room.

Just before the 2019-20 season, as the franchise underwent a difficult rebuild, Chabot signed an eight-year contract extension—becoming the first player to commit long-term to the club during that challenging period. That deal currently has two seasons remaining.

Chabot Represents a New Era for the Senators

The dominant storyline of the offseason was the Tkachuk trade saga. Now that the situation has concluded, Senators fans are eager to move forward, and naming Chabot as captain effectively closes that chapter.

The Senators found themselves in a fortunate position with numerous viable captaincy candidates. Chabot was previously the runner-up in 2021 before the captaincy was awarded to Tkachuk, while other players have grown into leaders, or, in Claude Giroux’s case, signed with the team specifically to contribute to its culture.

Had the team entered the season without a captain, the role would have remained heavily associated with Tkachuk, prompting endless questions about who would fill his shoes. Instead, that responsibility now officially belongs to Chabot.

Reports indicated that the locker room was growing weary of the persistent Tkachuk rumors, which showed no signs of disappearing while he remained in Ottawa. Additionally, some players reportedly grew frustrated with Tkachuk hosting the “Wingmen” podcast.

These distracting narratives permeated the season, and the change in captaincy, combined with Tkachuk’s departure, should help restore focus within the locker room.

While no one was pleased to see Tkachuk depart, the conclusion of this saga effectively eliminates the constant rumors and media distractions surrounding the situation.

Chabot has long been a key voice within the team’s leadership group, and his influence will carry even greater weight in his new role as captain. With high aspirations in a highly competitive Atlantic Division, Chabot is poised to lead the Senators deep into the postseason.
