Ghana begins its 2026 World Cup campaign in North America with high hopes, but Carlos Queiroz’s side will have to start Group L without Thomas Partey.
In an unexpected development on the eve of the tournament, the veteran midfielder has been officially ruled out of Ghana’s opening match against Panama in Toronto.
Although the 33‑year‑old Villarreal midfielder was included in the final 26‑man squad and attended the preliminary training camp in Boston, his absence is due to a legal issue with Canadian authorities.
Canadian Justice Roger Lafrenière rejected an emergency application from Partey’s legal team that sought to override a decision by immigration officials, who had previously denied Partey a Temporary Resident Visa to enter the country.
