Thousands Rally Behind Turkish Governor Amid Sportswear Controversy

The governor of Ardahan province, Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli, has resigned following criticism over his choice of attire during cycling activities. Despite stepping down, thousands of supporters have launched a petition urging his reinstatement, highlighting his contributions to sports development and youth engagement in the region.

Çiçekli, who led the northeastern province, was dismissed last week without official justification. The controversy erupted after local politicians and media scrutinized his social media posts showing him in cycling attire, including tights. Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP İnan Akgün Alp criticized his conduct, stating he prioritized “social media content creation” over governance and accused him of undermining the “dignity of state office.”

In response, Çiçekli defended his actions, clarifying that wearing sports gear during workouts was routine. “I exercise in sports clothes,” he said. When asked about his future plans, he added, “I will keep pedaling,” referencing both his passion for cycling and metaphorical resilience.

The backlash intensified after Çiçekli promoted cycling events in Ardahan, sharing videos of large group rides and rowing sessions on Lake Çıldır, which he described as fostering community unity through sports. His social media campaigns aimed to boost tourism and public health initiatives but drew sharp criticism from local lawmakers.

Following his removal on 17 July via a presidential decree signed by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, supporters quickly mobilized. An online petition titled “Ardahan Governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli Should Remain in Office” garnered over 9,400 signatures within hours of its launch. The petition emphasizes Çiçekli’s achievements in sports infrastructure, youth programs, and cycling tourism, calling his removal “unjustified.”

“His efforts have strengthened sports culture and developed healthy habits among youth,” the petition states, stressing the need for his continued leadership. With Ardahan’s population under 100,000, local residents argue his removal disrupts progress in integrating sports into regional development.
