Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of a young doctor who was shot dead during a robbery near the Teen Talwar intersection in Karachi’s Clifton district, the South Zone police confirmed in a press release Wednesday.
Dr. Akash Kumar, a house officer at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), was killed Monday after armed assailants intercepted his vehicle and fled with approximately Rs2 million he had withdrawn from a private bank.
According to the police statement, Dr. Akash had visited a bank earlier that day to withdraw Rs5 million, placing Rs2 million and Rs3 million into separate white envelopes. While traveling to a second bank with his father and the cash, four robbers on two motorcycles blocked their car. One suspect opened the vehicle door and fired at Dr. Akash, who succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. A case was registered on the complaint of the victim’s father under Sections 34, 397, and 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Acting on a tip-off Tuesday night, police spotted a suspicious vehicle in the Defence Housing Authority area. Following a pursuit, officers apprehended three suspects and recovered three pistols, mobile phones, and a white Suzuki Alto bearing fraudulent registration plates, which was allegedly used as the getaway vehicle. A separate case has been lodged for the illegal weapons and fake plates.
During initial interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to the killing, revealing they had surveilled the doctor prior to the robbery. They disclosed that an accomplice positioned inside the first bank had alerted them once Dr. Akash withdrew the cash, providing details on his appearance and the amount taken. This intelligence allowed the gang to intercept the vehicle en route to the second bank.
Authorities stated the arrested individuals belong to an organized gang responsible for numerous robberies and street crimes across Karachi, all possessing prior criminal records. Raids are underway to apprehend the remaining accomplices, including the alleged bank insider.
The killing triggered widespread outrage within the medical community, prompting protests by doctors at JPMC. The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) condemned the incident, citing it as a grim reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the metropolis.
