Three Arrested in Greece Over Bombings Targeting Conservative Party Members

Greek counterterrorism police arrested three individuals on Friday in connection with recent bombings targeting members of the ruling conservative New Democracy party, an attack that left one person dead and multiple others injured, according to officials.

The July 1 explosions in Thessaloniki struck the residences of parliamentary candidate Afroditi Nestora and properties associated with former lawmaker Savvas Anastasiadis and local party committee head Zisis Ioakeimovits.

Nestora’s 72-year-old mother, who lived in the same building, suffered burns covering 80% of her body and died hours after the attack. She was laid to rest on Thursday in Kozani, northern Greece, during a funeral attended by senior officials, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Nestora, recovering from her injuries, was discharged from the hospital to participate in the funeral proceedings. She later described the attack as an “inhumane, indiscriminate terrorist act” that had placed her family in a dire situation in a Facebook post.

The public order ministry confirmed the arrests and noted ongoing investigations. State television reported that the suspects—a 29-year-old man in Thessaloniki and a 26-year-old woman in Crete—are suspected of ties to anarchist organizations. Authorities highlighted that improvised explosive devices, commonly employed by anarchist or far-left groups in Greece, were used in the attacks.
