Key Points
Qualifying for Social Security benefits in retirement typically requires earning 40 work credits over a lifetime. However, individuals with limited earnings may not accumulate enough credits to qualify based on their own work record.
If you lack sufficient work credits, spousal benefits can still provide coverage. These benefits are available if your spouse is eligible for Social Security based on their earnings history.

Spousal benefits differ from standard Social Security payments, making it essential to understand filing timing and how they integrate into retirement planning. Below are three critical considerations.
1. You cannot claim until your spouse files
If you wish to receive spousal benefits, you must wait for your spouse to claim their own Social Security benefits before filing. (Divorced individuals follow different rules and can claim spousal benefits based on an ex‑spouse’s record prior to the ex’s filing.)
Filing for spousal benefits before reaching full retirement age results in a reduced payment. Full retirement age is 67 for those born in 1960 or later.
2. No financial advantage to delaying your claim
For benefits based on your own earnings, delaying beyond full retirement age increases payments by 8 % each year up to age 70. Spousal benefits do not qualify for these delayed‑retirement credits.
The maximum spousal benefit is 50 % of your spouse’s full retirement benefit. For example, if your spouse receives $3,000 at full retirement age, your spousal benefit caps at $1,500, regardless of when you file.
3. Spousal benefits can become survivor benefits with higher value
If you outlive your spouse, your spousal benefits typically convert to survivor benefits, which are worth 100 % of the amount your spouse was entitled to.
Using the same example, while your spousal benefit is limited to $1,500, survivor benefits could provide up to $3,000 per month once your spouse passes away.
Understanding spousal benefits is vital for retirement income planning. Knowing the potential amounts and optimal filing times can help you maximize the Social Security support available to you.
