TikTok has reached a settlement with the U.S. government to address allegations that its platform infringed children’s online privacy rights.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced a $400 million settlement with TikTok, addressing concerns that the short‑video platform violated children’s online privacy protections.
The DOJ stated on Friday that it had reached a settlement with TikTok, ByteDance, and their affiliates concerning compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which mandates that services targeting children obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from users under 13.
The department filed a lawsuit against TikTok and ByteDance in 2024.
The department said TikTok intentionally allowed children to create standard accounts, after which they could produce and share short‑form videos and messages with adults and others on the regular TikTok platform, and that the company collected personal information from these minors without parental consent.
TikTok will pay the DOJ $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million payable once a court dissolves a prior settlement involving TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly.
Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. said the settlement is a major victory for American children and parents, underscoring the Department’s commitment to safeguarding children online and ensuring companies entrusted with personal data fulfill their legal obligations, thereby securing a substantial recovery and reinforcing the protections families deserve.
In January, ByteDance agreed to form a majority U.S.-owned joint venture to store domestic data and avert a potential U.S. ban on the app, which has more than 200 million users in the United States.
The DOJ said that, since filing the lawsuit, TikTok has implemented significant changes and enhanced safeguards to protect children’s privacy.
Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division said the settlement reflects substantial progress, secures a significant monetary recovery, and brings the matter to a successful conclusion.
