Canelo Alvarez reaffirmed his status as a super-middleweight world champion with a victory over Christian Mbilli on Saturday. Two-division world champion Tim Bradley subsequently shared his assessment of the performance.
Before the fight, questions lingered about whether the 36-year-old Mexican still possessed the drive needed to prevail in a high-stakes battle, especially after Mbilli pledged to press the action and pull off an upset.
Yet Alvarez’s ring intelligence was on full display. The four-division champion secured a unanimous-decision win, delivering one of his strongest performances in recent memory.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bradley argued that Canelo’s success stemmed from his ability to intimidate Mbilli and disrupt the French-Cameroonian’s strategy.
“Mbilli was clearly rattled by Alvarez’s presence. Stepping into the ring with Canelo, he felt that aura. A fighter’s mere presence can slow an opponent down—just standing there, like the boogeyman.”
“Mbilli had watched Canelo dominate opponents for years. When he finally faced him, it became evident that this was a different level. The spotlight proved overwhelming.”
“He appeared spooked last night. Despite his physical advantages, he hesitated to engage, fearful of being countered.”
“His team entered with a different approach, and he abandoned his identity entirely. That is how significantly the performance deteriorated.”
Bradley also expressed confidence that Alvarez still has much to offer the sport, dismissing any notion that the champion should retire soon.
“Canelo still has plenty left in the tank. Last night he demonstrated that by neutralizing Mbilli, who was expected to come forward and throw everything.”
“Mbilli threw numerous punches but missed nearly all of them.”
Alvarez reportedly has one fight remaining on his contract with Riyadh Season, though securing his preferred opponent for that bout currently appears unlikely.
