Confining daily food intake to a nine-hour window and avoiding meals for four hours before bedtime may help protect cognitive function in later life, according to new research.

A pilot study involving older women with overweight or obesity found preliminary evidence of improved mental performance among participants who ate within a restricted timeframe compared to those who spread meals across a longer period.

While the findings are preliminary due to the trial’s small size, researchers suggest that if confirmed in larger studies, time-restricted eating could offer a practical strategy for preserving cognitive abilities by limiting food consumption to a narrower window and avoiding late-night eating.

“Losing weight alone can help slow cognitive decline in older age,” said Professor Sue Shapses, a nutritional scientist at Rutgers University in New Jersey. “But there may be additional benefits for people who do not eat outside an eight- to nine-hour window and stop eating four hours before going to sleep.”

Dementia remains the leading cause of death in the UK and the seventh globally, accounting for nearly two million deaths annually. While some risk factors such as age and genetics are unavoidable, experts estimate nearly half of cases could be prevented or delayed through lifestyle modifications. Midlife obesity increases the risk of later-life dementia by approximately 30%.

Shapses led a small clinical trial involving 47 women aged 50 to 79 with overweight or obesity. Participants were instructed to reduce daily caloric intake by 500 calories for six months. Within the cohort, 26 women were advised to consume all meals within a nine-hour window—typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.—while the remaining volunteers spread their eating over roughly 12 hours.

At the trial’s conclusion, both groups achieved similar weight loss, averaging approximately 7 kg (15 lbs). However, cognitive assessments revealed that the time-restricted eating group performed better on spatial planning and problem-solving tests. They also showed a trend toward fewer errors on memory and learning tasks, though performance on multitasking and reaction-time tests was comparable between groups.

Shapses characterized the effects as “modest” but noted they suggest time-restricted eating may enhance the ability to retain information for daily tasks and reduce errors related to memory, attention, and problem-solving. The findings were presented at Nutrition 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Maryland.

The research team now plans to investigate the mechanisms underlying the potential cognitive benefits of meal timing. The advantages may stem from a complex interplay of circadian rhythms, metabolism, and inflammation.

In many nations, including the UK and US, eating typically spans a 14-hour period, leaving only 10 hours of overnight fasting. However, emerging research indicates clear health benefits from extending the overnight fast. A review published in January found that finishing meals before 7 p.m. was associated with significant improvements in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, and metabolic health markers.

Professor Wendy Hall, head of nutritional sciences at King’s College London, who was not involved in the study, said restricting mealtimes to a narrow window may benefit brain health.

“Time-restricted eating is a plausible approach to supporting cognitive health in midlife and older adults with overweight, not only because it may help with weight management but also because avoiding large meals late in the evening may improve blood sugar control, vascular function, and inflammation,” she said.

Hall cautioned that the findings remain preliminary and emphasized the importance of reviewing the full peer-reviewed study to determine whether the observed improvements are clinically meaningful.
