Timothy Bradley has weighed in on a prospective clash between Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr., asserting that one fighter possesses the instincts to decisively “cook” the other.
The two American prospects have trended toward each other on their career paths since their early professional days, when both emerged as top welterweight prospects.
As they moved up to 154 lb, Ennis, who unified the 147 lb division, has become the reigning WBO and WBA world champion.
The 29‑year‑old secured that title after defeating Xander Zayas last weekend, delivering a career‑best performance that saw him score three knockdowns and earn a seventh‑round finish.
As an intensely reactive fighter, ‘Boots’ overcame several challenging moments, particularly in round three, but ultimately relied on his quicker hands and more potent attacks.
Relying largely on his victory over Zayas, many now regard Ennis as the top dog at 154 lb, while Ortiz has yet to earn a world title.
The 28‑year‑old boasts notable wins over Israil Madrimov and Serhii Bohachuk but has not fought since last November, when he finished Erickson Lubin in a second‑round knockout.
Even with Ortiz at his best, Hall of Famer Bradley told Ring Magazine that Ennis will prevail in a one‑sided competition.
“He gonna cook Ortiz just like he [did against] Zayas. ‘Boots’ is willing to take [punches] to [land his own shots].
“It’s not always a good thing, but it works for him. I think he fights off of feeling. If he don’t feel like you’ve got any punch, he’s willing to stand and exchange with you.”
Ortiz’s legal dispute with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy has kept him out of the ring, but the Texan is now expected to return later this year.
