Although Digger posted the weakest opening for a Tom Cruise film since Lions for Lambs in 2007, the actor expressed deep admiration for everyone involved in the Alejandro G. Iñárritu‑directed project.
In an Instagram post, Cruise shared, “I feel honored to have worked with such talented artists on this film. Thank you to the cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm. The experience was unforgettable, and I’m proud of what we achieved together.”
Earlier on Saturday, Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro noted that the satirical comedy opened with $8 million. Iñárritu said he aimed the film at Gen Z viewers, noting that 60 percent of ticket buyers were aged 18‑34 and over 70 percent were male. The dark comedy, in which Cruise plays wealthy oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, received a C+ from CinemaScore.
The film is currently screening in coastal markets, with AMC Lincoln Square reporting the highest grosses for the title.
In his review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond said Digger “unlike any film from a major Hollywood studio in years,” adding that Iñárritu “pushes boundaries further, potentially making it one of the most divisive mainstream releases in a long time.”
