Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo has expressed deep frustration over the recent turmoil that saw the university’s president and athletic director leave the campus. “I can’t stand what’s going on,” Izzo told reporters, calling the situation self‑inflicted and describing it as “ridiculous.” He added that he feels “ashamed, disgusted, and hurt,” urging the Spartan community to unite in the wake of the disruptions.
Kevin Guskiewicz’s two‑year tenure as president ended last month when he accepted a position at Clemson, citing board conflicts and a focus on past disagreements rather than future opportunities. Shortly thereafter, J Batt, the athletic director, also departed, moving to a “lateral” role at Kentucky.
Izzo, who has led the men’s basketball program since 1995, called on the Spartan Nation’s roughly 600,000 members to rally together. “What happened with our president is ridiculous,” he said, adding that the school’s instability threatens to set off a chain reaction affecting other areas.
Guskiewicz will stay in East Lansing until an interim or permanent replacement is appointed and will also serve on an interim basis for the newly vacated athletic director position while preparing for his move to Clemson. With the university now seeking its fourth president since 2022 and its fourth athletic director since 2021, stability remains a pressing concern for Michigan State leadership and the broader Spartan community.
