Tongue Confirms Root’s Message Fully Resonated with England Squad

Fast bowler Josh Tongue affirmed that captain Joe Root’s guidance on off-field conduct has been fully embraced by the squad.

On Tuesday, Root expressed his frustration that Brydon Carse had become the latest England player implicated in a late-night drinking incident.

He also disclosed that he had spoken to the team ahead of training for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, which starts on Thursday.

“It was a necessary conversation, a very productive talk from Rooty,” Tongue told BBC Sport.

He made it clear what it means to wear the England shirt, noting the privilege of representing the country and the desire to inspire young fans watching from the stands.

Carse has been dropped from the England squad for the second Test following his brief arrest during a night out in Derby on Saturday.

Video of the 31-year-old in handcuffs, surrounded by police, surfaced on social media on Sunday.

He was later released, but the England and Wales Cricket Board forwarded the case to the Cricket Regulator; the regulator’s inquiry has led to Carse’s omission from the Lord’s squad.

This incident adds to a series of controversies that have plagued the England men’s side over the last ten months.

Just last week, ahead of the first Test in his second tenure as captain, Root urged his players to be exemplary role models and decent human beings.

This week, Root openly voiced his irritation at the “stupid mistakes” made by the team.

Discussing Root’s remarks, Tongue said: “He was candid with everyone in the changing room, speaking plainly. Once the talk ended, our attention shifted entirely to the upcoming five days.”

When asked whether the message had resonated, Nottinghamshire’s Tongue responded: “Absolutely, 100%. The past is behind us; we must focus on moving forward.”
