Two individuals were fatally wounded and at least four others sustained injuries during a shooting incident at Toronto’s annual Salsa on St. Clair street festival on Saturday evening, according to local authorities.
Gunshots were reported as thousands gathered for the popular outdoor event, which has long been a staple of the city’s summer cultural calendar. Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 8:12 p.m. to the midtown district, where festival organizers had closed adjacent streets to accommodate attendees.
Police confirmed two fatalities at the scene while six total shooting victims were documented. Law enforcement urged local residents to avoid the area and comply with official directives as investigations continued.
Deputy Chief Frank Barredo of the Toronto Police noted that multiple exchanges of gunfire occurred during the incident. Two firearms were seized at the scene, though no suspects or victims have been identified in connection with the altercation. Authorities emphasized that preliminary assessments suggest the incident stemmed from a personal dispute rather than a premeditated attack.
The festival, typically drawing crowds exceeding 13,000 participants, was abruptly interrupted at 11:00 p.m. local time as per the deputy chief’s statement.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence as “reckless and irresponsible,” expressing profound concern over the shaken community.
Salsa on St. Clair has maintained its status as one of North America’s largest free cultural celebrations for over two decades, featuring dance competitions, Latin cuisine vendors, and street parades through downtown Toronto.
Local resident Michael Wacholtz voiced community apprehensions regarding the event’s expansion in recent years, citing increasing traffic challenges and perceived security gaps. “This violence is inconsistent with our city’s values,” he stated, recalling his experience fleeing the festival moments before gunshots erupted.
Toronto’s public safety record regarding mass shootings remains relatively uncommon. The city’s last recorded incident of similar severity occurred in 2018 when a street shooting in Greektown injured 13 individuals, including two young victims fatally wounded.
