A catastrophic fire tore through a Bangkok pub late Sunday night, claiming the lives of at least 27 people, including two musicians who were performing at the time.
One musician reported that the blaze likely originated near the stage, recalling that smoke emerged from a circuit breaker just before a power failure and a subsequent explosion triggered the rapid spread of the flames.
Authorities noted that the majority of the victims were discovered toward the rear of the establishment near the restrooms, a detail that has sparked serious concerns regarding the venue’s layout and safety protocols. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt indicated that a table may have been obstructing one of the emergency exits.
Governor Sittipunt confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine if the venue complied with legal permitting and safety requirements. The establishment’s owner was reported among the injured. Additionally, a dedicated contact center is being established to support victims and their families.
Preliminary observations suggest the fire raced across the ceiling, as several plastic tables and chairs remained intact. A full forensic investigation is currently being conducted to determine the official cause of the ignition.
Witnesses described a scene of limited visibility as smoke quickly filled the room. Local media reports indicate the fire was extinguished within an hour, and approximately 18 injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
