Nick Mendenhall recounted witnessing the fatal incident in a state of disbelief, observing the individual exit their seat and collide with another cart before plummeting to the ground. “It was just super, super bizarre, traumatic. I mean, it took me a couple of seconds, I feel like, to process what was going on,” he told the AP. “I can’t believe that I just saw that.”
Mendenhall’s thoughts immediately turned to the trauma experienced by the deceased’s loved ones and all passengers present during the ride.
A witness described the incident as being captured in souvenir photos taken automatically during the roller coaster’s operation, though the BBC has yet to verify this claim.
Connor Thompson told CBS News he was in line when spectators began shouting in distress. “Everyone was kind of confused at first, and then there was someone yelling, ‘Call 911! Someone fell out!'” Thompson recalled. “At first it was almost like I didn’t believe it because I thought that was impossible for something like that to happen.”
He further described seeing the cart enter the hub area where others were waiting and noticed the safety restraint was unlatched.
Another witness, CiCi Nelson, told CNN she observed an empty seat with a loose safety bar and a blood-covered individual as the roller coaster returned. Nelson described a scene of panic, with someone exclaiming, “Someone fell off.”
Brittany Landry, who believed she witnessed Kariem being ejected from the ride, said she was overwhelmed with emotion. “I broke because we were just on there,” she told Fox News, visibly distressed.
