Although the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Travis Hunter with two-way intentions, his role has gradually narrowed throughout this season. By Sunday, however, his position was unambiguous: exclusively a cornerback.
Hunter participated in every defensive snap during Sunday’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals while contributing nothing on offense or special teams. Head coach Liam Coen cited the necessity of the move, noting that cornerbacks Montaric “Buster” Brown and Christian Braswell were both sidelined with injuries.
“We knew with Buster being down and Braswell being down, he was going to play every single snap of the game,” Coen said. “We had some things for him on offense, but we just didn’t feel like putting him out there — if he gets hurt on offense, we’re in a real bad spot. So didn’t want to put ourselves at risk there. I was very proud of the way Travis played defensively today.”
Hunter delivered one of the game’s most impressive defensive performances, tallying an interception that was ultimately voided by a penalty, numerous pass breakups, and several impactful tackles.
“He played his ass off today,” Coen said. “He had the pick that was called back, he had a ton of PBUs, he had the huge tackle, ended up knocking the dude out pretty good. I just thought Trav balled today.”
Though the organization has not formally confirmed it, Hunter’s minimal offensive involvement suggests the team now regards him as a cornerback with occasional gadget-play utility rather than a traditional two-way athlete. Still, on a day with a single responsibility, the Jaguars were satisfied with his execution.
