The Australian Taxation Office’s contentious prohibition on credit card payments for tax liabilities will be postponed for up to twelve months, following the allocation of additional funding to the agency.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers confirmed the deferral on Friday, responding to sustained opposition from the small business sector regarding the ATO’s original proposal.
The tax office had unveiled the policy shift last week, attributing the decision to the Reserve Bank’s restriction on credit card surcharges.
