Zakhakhel Tribesmen Halt Highway to Torkham, Demand Security After Targeted Killing

In Khyber, angry Zakhakhel tribesmen halted the main highway to Torkham on Saturday, declaring they would arm themselves for self‑defence following the fatal targeted shooting of two men late Friday night.

Under the leadership of tribal elder Malak Abdullah Khan, the demonstrators — comprising numerous political activists, civil‑society representatives, and tribesmen — stated that armed volunteers would be tasked with patrolling the locality.

They also imposed a total prohibition on motorcycle use and barred all government employees from the Zakhakhel tribe from carrying out their duties until a lasting peace solution is achieved.

Additionally, they demanded a boycott of polio vaccination drives and the shutdown of all government and private schools in the Zakhakhel region.

The protesters further refused to engage with any government official until a substantive crackdown is conducted against suspected militants sheltering in Mazreena and nearby areas.

They also urged local police officers to forgo their uniforms to reduce the risk of targeting.

A reward of Rs1 million was announced for anyone caught spying for outlawed militant groups or law‑enforcement agencies.

The demonstrators warned that the roadblock would persist until the perpetrators of the targeted killing are arrested and the area is cleared of undesirable elements.

The closure also halted the repatriation of Afghan families, stranding numerous vehicles transporting Afghan nationals.

Moreover, Zakhakhel elders condemned a series of raids on private homes, noting that armed local residents often patrolled the main road at night.

The highway protest followed the killing of two individuals in the Sultan Khel area of Landi Kotal late Friday evening.

Police reported that the two men, who were relatives, were shot dead by assailants on motorcycles in front of their home.

Both men died instantly, while the attackers fled to a nearby hilly area, prompting a subsequent search operation.

This was the third such incident since Ramadan began, following earlier attacks on two policemen and a teenage relative of a police officer in the same area.
