The city of Sacramento recently launched free electric bike and scooter safety courses; ideally, the Sacramento River Cats would sign their mascot, Dinger, up for the program.
A video, which went viral on Tuesday, shows the mascot riding a scooter across the infield during the break between innings when he accidentally collided with Oklahoma City Comets outfielder Alek Thomas as the player exited the dugout last Saturday.
The incident occurred on Christmas in July Day at Sutter Health Park, the temporary home of Major League Baseball’s Athletics, where Dinger was dressed in a Santa hat and coat while navigating the scooter along the first base side.
As Dinger approached the dugout, Thomas—a prospect for the Dodgers—began jogging toward the outfield, resulting in a full-speed collision that struck both squarely in the torso and knocked them to the ground.
A stadium employee and a member of the Comets dugout rushed over to check on them before the footage ended.
Thomas appeared to remain in the game throughout Saturday following the incident, and he was present in the lineup on Tuesday when the Comets played the Las Vegas Aviators.
The footage initially appeared on Reddit before being shared on X and Instagram, where it rapidly gained viral traction.
