Tropical Storm Edouard has developed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall later today along the southeastern coast of Texas. Although its duration will be brief, the system may briefly intensify into a hurricane as it approaches the Texas-Louisiana border. Here is the latest information.
Current Status of Tropical Storm Edouard
The National Hurricane Center has monitored the system closely over recent days. Forecasters noted on Monday afternoon, “Although it has only about a day over the very warm Gulf waters, strengthening is expected within a generally low shear environment.” At that time, the system was merely a Tropical Depression. Its compact size increased the likelihood of intensification given the favorable developmental conditions.
“The intensity forecast today is problematic. Edouard has developed a small core that could be prone to rapid changes in intensity,” NHC forecasters stated early Tuesday morning. They have not ruled out the possibility of the storm reaching Category 1 hurricane intensity. Regardless, it will be a highly impactful high-end tropical storm event. As of 4:15 a.m. Central Time, the storm was moving west-northwest at 8 miles per hour with sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

Expected Impacts
A potent tropical storm or potentially a Category 1 hurricane will affect the Upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts, as well as east-central Texas, on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the NHC, “A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for High Island to the Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line. Tropical Storm Watch is up from Port Bolivar to the Vermilion/Iberia Parish Line. If the storm continues to strengthen, a Hurricane Watch will be in effect for High Island to Cameron, Louisiana.”
Landfall is anticipated near the Texas and Louisiana border, which will keep the storm’s center and most severe conditions east of the Houston metropolitan area. The primary threats will stem from rainfall, with both flash and river flooding possible. Up to 4 feet of storm surge is also possible from western Louisiana to High Island, Texas.
Tropical Storm Edouard marks the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Historically, the fifth named storm occurs around August 22nd. Forecasters predicted below-normal activity due to El Niño, leaving the Atlantic basin relatively quiet thus far. However, as September begins and meteorological fall commences, seasonal activity typically increases, peaking around the second week of the month.

While Edouard brings much-needed rain to the region, residual moisture from Tropical Storm Dolly recently provided relief to drought-stricken Puerto Rico. Parts of Texas are also experiencing drought, so rainfall is beneficial. However, 3 to 6 inches of rain falling on dry ground will create flood hazards, presenting a complex scenario. Research sponsored by NASA and conducted at the University of Georgia indicates that these storms are ideal drought-busters. “Shepherd and colleagues found that while major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5) drop more rain in a single day than other storms, weaker hurricanes, tropical storms, and depressions contribute more to the cumulative total throughout the hurricane season,” said a NASA press release.
