Tropical Storm Isaias formed early on Wednesday within the warm waters off eastern Mexico and forecasters predict it could strengthen into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, possibly as early as Thursday before striking the U.S. Gulf Coast later in the week.
Isaias replaced Tropical Depression Nine overnight as it gained momentum. Located approximately 285 miles (460 km) west of Progreso, Mexico—and roughly 580 miles southwest of where the Mississippi River joins the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana—the storm carried maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h) on Wednesday morning and was moving east‑northeast at 8 mph.
